Mrs. May’s Classroom

Burleson ISD

Meet Mrs. May, an Early Childhood Special Education teacher in Burleson ISD. This is her eighth year teaching and her fourth in a self-contained classroom. She supports each student academically, developmentally, behaviorally, socially, and functionally.

Her students have a wide range of sensory, communication, behavioral, social, developmental, and learning needs. In this classroom, books and toys can support turn-taking, sharing, imitation, pretend play, and communication. Visual supports help students understand their day and communicate needs, while sensory tools can help them regulate and participate in learning.

Classroom materials are used every day, so books, toys, sensory materials, fidgets, visuals, laminating supplies, and other supports wear out and need replacing. Mrs. May sometimes purchases materials herself when the classroom does not have what her students need.

The $2,500 goal will help provide practical classroom resources for current students and future students for years to come, supporting learning, participation, communication, regulation, and functional life skills.
